Rather than force awkward conversations, I've leaned into a parental philosophy with my sons: presence first, the written word second. Presence doesn't need justification beyond the presence itself.

The maple leaf didn't become Canada's symbol because the government decreed it. Settlers and soldiers chose it first. Wore it. Bled for it. The official recognition came a hundred and five years later.
